A Little girl, an avaricious reader, even when she can’t understand what is in those books, but she continues to read Maxim Gorky, Leo Tolstoy, Federico Garcia Lorca and Simone de Beauvoir, Desmond Morris and numerous writers even she can’t pronounce their names. Though she does not know what she was reading, she had the urge to read more.
She is multitalented personality - an actress, a radio and TV presenter. Also a novelist, at the same time a poet and a producer too. Though she does not like to be introduced as a journalist, she writes column too. She is none other than good looking, modern and savvy Nadie.
Nadie Wasalamudaliarachchi …. Yes, she plays all these roles at the same time.
Nadie hails from Matara, the southern part of the country. She finished her education at St. Thomas Girls’ High School in Matara and travelled to Colombo after her A/L level, as her sister was employed in Colombo.
She begins her presenter career in a private radio station. She was one of the best presenters of that radio station. Nadie who began her career as a trainee announcer and gradually promoted after an year in the radio, as a TV presenter, when the company went in for a TV station. In 1998 she presented her first TV program. It was a current affairs program named “Who is there”
Nadie was fortunate to join Sri Lanka’s first morning television program for women, named as “Pahan Piyasa” by Sirasa TV, one of the most famous live programs when it was introduced. “We got amazing feedbacks from our viewers” Nadie proudly reminded her journey as a presenter.
At the same time, she presented several week-end programs which drew a significant viewer crowd. “Hindi Top 10” presented with Sampath Sri Jayasinghe and “Ae” (She) presented with Kelum Srimal are two such most recognized programs.” Nadie goes back in her memory lane. “Anyway, Tharu mansala is the program which won the hearts of all young and adults than any other program, I think” she says.
Nadie who was doing current affairs and entertainment programs had been given the opportunity to read weekend news in 2005. She pointed out that the opportunity made her to go to another crowd of TV viewers, completely different from the entertainment programs. But at the same year, she said good bye for her full time presenter career and joined an advertising firm as a creative writer. During that period too, she continued as presenter in the TV week-end programs.
In 2008, we met Nadee, in a deferent role. Young beautiful television presenter Nadie has authored and released her first book. It is a novel and she has named it as “Akasha Parwatha”. She says “my novel is a historical story. It is about a historical concept which has been mingled in Sri Lankan society for a long time”.
But it is not just a novel to read and forget it in the next morning. She selects the time period of King Seegiri Kashyapa and makes social analysis of that period. Politics, woman, love and several other issues were clearly analyzed in her book.
In the same year, she published her poetry collections. She names it as “Aadaraya Samanga Gabsawata Erehiwa” (With Affection against the Abortion). When she penned her thoughts in the collection, a social thinker Deepthi Kumara Gunarathne commended her poems with his book review. “I just collected my thoughts with my inner soul with the intention of changing the social pattern. I feel no one expected such a presentation from a TV presenter, who is popular for her entertainment programs”, she says.
She becomes an actress playing a role in Chandrarathna Mapitigama’s “Situgedara” tele-drama. Veteran actors and actresses like Wasanthi Chathurani, Nihal Fernando, Palitha Silva, Nimanthi Porage, Amila Abeysekera and several other leading artistes played key roles in the tele-drama.
The story runs around a girl called “Bhagya”. Nadie played the Bhagya cast. “I did the maximum justice for the character,” she quipped.
Meanwhile, she has joined another company as a Public Relations Promotions & Advertising Manager. “These days I am getting ready for my short film and my second novel. My second novel is a political story which speaks about four generations in Sri Lanka. It is a kind of experiment. I wonder how my readers will accept the book” she says.
“I never ran for popularity, but it came to me” she says. Speaking about the life of TV presenter, she says “that is also kind of act. We give what audience expects from us. We as presenters just play a role for a while on the stage or in front of the camera. As soon as I finish with my role, I go to my world. In my world, I am not simple as you see. I have an open dialogue with the world” she says.
She says she has an unending quest for peace and peace of mind.
Nadie is multi-talented character. She is a good painter too. “My leisure time is given for reading and painting. Reading practices me to think and painting relaxes my mind”, she says
