Colombo Fashion Week 2010

Models showcase designs on the catwalk as part of “Colombo Fashion Week 2010” at the Hilton hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka. 05/02/2010.

By Sumaiya Rizvi

The curtains came down at the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week last night.

Renowned Bollywood Designer Suneet Varma's collection was the most anticipated collection this season and he designs closed the show last night.

Varma's collection was a departure from his usual ethinic indian clothes. Going by his collection which seemed like a couple of collections put together started off with the men's beach and resort wear boasting pucci like pure silk men's kurta's teemed with ultra vibrant swimming trunks and beach shorts. Then his collection moved on to handloom Women's clothing a side of him that we are less familiar with. Then his third and last segment dazzeled the audience in its ball gowns and glitzy cocktail dresses in the colours most 'in' this season.

Darshi Keertisena of Buddhi batiks fame showcased her remarkable evening dresses in solid and self coloured touches of batik in georgette, brocade, chiffon and pure silk. while Chula set the mood for the collection in her dance routine in similar fashion to the last year. Then lastly the showstopper beige and cream saree worked in gold bugle beads and an elaborate collar jacket was fit for a bride.

Yolande displayed a saree and womens casual wear. The outstanding piece of design was her peacock design saree. The show was presented
in an Egypt theme with two egyptian warriers standing guard on the runway.

Then Dimuthu Sahabandu presenting the collection Indie played with lycra in interesting kowl effect pale coloured dresses that were unforgettable and remarkable. It seemed like watching a hollywood movie during the Marilyn years.
Odel introduced Nico and the bandit an array of casual wear clothes and accessories for men and women alike. It was certainly an intersting change to a new embark wardrobe.

Agatha De La Ruiz epitomized the the barbie look in her bright dresses and frocks which was reminicent of the rainbow. There were two dresses
interestingly designed in the shape of a heart.

A new designer Ramona Oshini showcased her collection of women's wear in black, red and off white in fancy cuts and shapes with an interesting bridal showstopper at the end.

Kur by Kasuni was the ambassodor of Beeralu and she played her part well introducing the beeralu into the cocktail dress not forgetting her jute bags that were creative. She was the only designer to present a kandyan saree in black and off white beeralu.

Stringhopper label presented their summer resort wear which seemed to have the makings of a navy look to the shirts. An important point to note was its double collar tees. It was amazing to note that the dress shirts had the signature stringhopper design in batik.

Sarani's halloween themed women's collection saw crosses being used as props while skulls, skeletons and pelikans were appliqued on to the dress. The best feature had to be its cobweb head mask was admirable.

Then Alecca Carrano's lineny maxi dresses and bird cage veils were the highlight of her collection. Cut-lon cloth saw its comeback in one of her dresses this season.

All in all it was a mix bag of designers with their signature styles and tastes. Brainchild of HSBC Colombo Fashion Week Ajai Vir Singh concluding saying he wanted to keep the spirit of the event by giving local talent a platform to shine.

Colombo Fashion Week 2011 kick off

By Sumaiya Rizvi

The most anticipated event in the fashion calender the first day of the HSBC
Colombo Fashion Week 2011 took off in style last night at grand ballroom of
the Colombo Hilton. The opening night boasted a host of Sri Lankan and two
foreign designers.

The opening designer for the show was Fahad Sheriff of the brand Middle
Finger which is widely known for its casual menswear surprised us with a
selection of casual women's clothing together with an array of mens shirts,
pants and jackets in the palest of colours.

Arugambay resort and beachwear label which has seen a tremendous success in
the local fashion scene. Introduced the Arugambay surfing boards which will
no doubt be the brands next big thing not forgetting its new sandals for
women in vibrant colours similar to its flip flop range.

LICC jeans showcasing its designs gave me good reason to keep wearing jeans
to everyplace. Last night saw a re-invention of a trend where the harem
denim pant stole the limelight.

Laksala a young Russian designer used an array of fabrics like net and silks
to create a truly international experience which goes to reinforce that the
netty was the way to go in her two piece skirt and jacket or cocktail
dresses.

Asanga who had showcased his designs at the CFW before made an impact with
his simple yet elegant white sarees in colourful symmetrical brush strokes
that made a world of difference.

Gaurav Gupta truly lived up to an Indian designer playing with bright orange
and coral for off shoulder flouncy dresses and made up sarees. The signature
feature that dominated most of his fushia dresses and metallic sarees was
the use of silver accents which looked like an oversize brooch at times and
jewelry at another.

Sonalie a fresh face to the fashion industry was the newest designer to
choose batik to express her designs. I must say that she stood apart in the
non floral and non abstract prints she had conveyed on the saree.

Another interesting change since the 2010 fashion week was its interesting
runway design which was in the shape of a 'U' and all seats
arranged only hinted at the enormity of the event since last year.

All in all it was eye opener of what is yet to come and going by what i saw
i'm sure to have my eyes peeled for a second night at the HSBC Colombo
Fashion Week.

Colombo Fashion Week 2011 Second night

By Sumaiya Rizvi

The second night at the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week marked South East Asia’s first ethical fashion week with designers and labels all striving to make their creations environmentally friendly.

Bibi Russell a Bangladeshi designer started off the show with a bang in her ethnic music with earthly tones in interesting day wear garments for women and men alike. Her easy going clothes with a touch of colour were a welcoming change since yesterday.

Buddhi Batiks designer Darshi Keertisena amazed us all with her beige, off white and biscuit flowing maxi length Grecian dresses that saw a departure from her usual bright batik floral sarees. The most unforgettable ensemble in her collection was the jewelry. The huge pendant was the shape of a leaf that is part of the nobel prize logo and the other was an orchid both in
Gold.

Dimitris Zoz was an Intalian denim wear designer and he boasted an array of female and male skinny jeans in autumn shades and wasted looks.

Malaysian fashion house Masaba displayed flouncy cocktail dresses in arresting pleats and lycra tights.

Strighopper Sri Lankan menswear brand brought to light the ultra short t-shirt like shirts in plaid. The label had paid attention to detail by introducing t-shirt hemming on the sleeve.

Colombo Jewelry Stores displayed their finest jewelry from the collection ‘quite simply stunning’. The diamond chandelier earrings together with pearls were the highlight of the show. Not forgetting their diamond brooch and hairpin that was intricately elaborate.

The new baby in the block the Avirate fashion house introduced their cocktail and maxi dresses in print and plain alike. They definitely have floral and abstract dresses in colourful and colourless in store for you.

The Ultra brand which is a foreign brand themed their collection on a biker mean look with most of their dresses in black and grey. Another Indian Designer was Samant Chauhan playing with Indian hand woven eco friendly silk and cotton.

The peak of the show was when Rizwan Beyg from Pakistan displayed his breathtaking collection in magenta pink, lemon green, indigo, orange, yellow and royal blue in pishwas like kameez, ponchos and overcoats. Made the entire colour and glamour quotient for the evening.

All in all it was an inspiring and satisfying evening. Join me again to bring you the break down of the final night at the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week. Until then it’s Sumaiya signing off.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week begins

Friday, January 21, 2011
Scheduled for 4, 5, 6 Feb 2011

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week, informally labeled as South Asia’s only international fashion week begins its final countdown to another edition. The most awaited and highly anticipated event is scheduled to take place on 4,5 and 6 February 2011 at the Hilton Grand Ballroom.

This year’s event will feature 22 Sri Lankan fashion designers and labels alongside 12 reputed international designers.

HSBC Colombo Fashion Week is a not-for-profit event that is committed to uplifting Sri Lanka’s fashion design industry. It aims at guiding and incubating young and potential designers and creates retail and marketing opportunities for established and new designers by providing a platform to interact with reputed international designers, media and independent retail buyers.

This initiative also deals with the related fields of local fashion retail, crafts and workshops, like Batik, Beeralu and weaver communities.

“Every year we give ourselves bigger objectives and then work through the year to achieve them, this helps us maintain direction to take the Sri Lankan fashion design industry on to a bigger platform. We want Sri Lankan fashion designers to be commercially successful, showcasing in international fashion weeks, retailing in international markets and have a successful local retail network in Sri Lanka. We are not very far from that.” Says Ajaiy Virr Singh, President, Colombo Fashion Week.
In 2010, HSBC Colombo Fashion Week’s MOUs with 5 international fashion weeks; namely Miami Fashion Week, Russia Fashion Week, Malaysia Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Festival and Pakistan Fashion Week, went into implementation. As a result, a few selected Sri Lankan designers got the opportunity to showcase their collections at these prestigious events. Kanchana and Fouzal Hameed were two of the lucky recipients of this initiative.

HSBC, the title sponsor of the event has been associated with Colombo Fashion Week since 2008 for the fourth year running.

Continuing to bolster the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week as its Title Sponsor, HSBC’s Chief Executive Officer, for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Nick Nicolaou stated, “The HSBC Colombo Fashion Week has become a much looked forward to event by our high networth customers and we are indeed delighted to be associated with such a remarkably prestigious fashion extravaganza. There is immense potential among our local designers and this event creates the platform for them to become commercially successful and showcase their creativity beyond the ramp. We look forward to another successful event and hope the local fashion industry will be taken to greater heights with opportunity given to new as well as existing designers.”

The highlight of this year’s HSBC Colombo Fashion Week is the launch of South East Asia’s first ethical fashion week. Titled FASHION ETHICAL, to be launched on the second day of the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week, is a collaborative effort of ethical representation from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Malaysia. Sri Lanka will be the hub for Fashion Ethical, which will then create a platform for other countries in the region to follow suit, with India being the next destination.

In addition to the renowned international designers who are regulars at the show; such as Bibi Russell from Bangladesh, Rizwan Beyg from Pakistan and Agatha Ruiz De La Prada from Spain there will be new faces Like Alecca Carrano and Dimitris Zoz from Italy, The Ultra from Malaysia, Suneet Varma, Gaurav Gupta, Samant Chauhan Masaba from India and Laskala from Russia.

“We believe in the potential of Sri Lanka’s fashion design industry and its related arts and crafts. Over the years CFW has provided a tremendous platform for local fashion entrepreneurs and Sri Lanka Apparel supports this initiative once again” said A.Sukumaran, Chairman, Sri Lanka Apparel.

The local designer line up is by far the largest that we have had yet with twenty-two local designers showcasing. In addition to the regulars such as Darshi of Buddhi Batik fame, Kanchana and Yolande, there will also be collections from Fahad Sherrif of Middle Finger, Fouzul Hameed of FH Studio, Stringhopper, LICC, Acushla, Pearly King, and Sarani to name a few.

Every year HSBC Colombo Fashion Week conducts workshops and this year the British Council has partnered as the knowledge partner to bring Sally Denton, Managing Director, The Trend Boutique (UK) Ltd to speak on:

• Trends – Overview of how trends work, how to identify, key references & how to adapt for own market. Followed by an overview of key fashion & textile trends

Sizzling Sarah -Fashion Model

Sunday, January 16, 2011
Heart talk with gifted model

She’s bold. She’s beautiful. She’s intelligent. She is everything in one package. She is Sarah Stephani Walker – a new generation model who is blessed with all the right features.

You are just 19…but you appear to be more mature then your age?

“Well, I don’t think maturity comes with age, it comes with experience and attitude towards life.

Are you happy about your journey so far in the glamour world?

“Of course, there’s nothing to grumble about. I have posed for magazines as a model and have also done a couple of popular visuals. I believe I have a long journey to make in this field.

Are you happy with the feedback you are getting now?

“It’s so flattering to know that you are recognized by the people. However I make it a point to change my outlook quite regularly and that makes people wonder who this new girl is. I like to be different at all times. I love changes in life and my looks. Looking different is so lovely, I should say.

Any links to glamour in your family?

“No, not in my immediate family circle but I had a cousin called Tissa who really supported and motivated me into this field. I am also grateful to Rozanne Diasz who helped m a lot.

What kind of person is this ‘Sarah’?

“Oh she is a shy reserved type of person who comes out of her shell when the camera is switched on. I respect people and their views. I hate people who try to show off. I always want to have my feet firmly placed on the ground.

Was it your dream to become a model some day?

“Not really, but these thoughts were playing up in my mind from my schooldays as well. I was also dreaming of becoming a teacher, just like any other girl. I will be following a pre school teacher training course soon. Whatever I do, I want to do them in a professional manner. I must thank my director Rasika who helps me maintain this standard in the field.
Love and romance?

Love is something we need till we depart from this world. I am engaged to a nice guy who loves me immensely. He is very understanding, unassuming and so supportive. I am glad that I have the best guy in the world. We might marry in the future and that would not affect our love for each other.

What do you do when you are hurt?

I cry, cry and cry. I am easily hurt when I don’t get what I need. At times I know that I am stubborn too. But overall I have no reason to feel sad or hurt because I have been blessed with good things and good people around me.

How do you maintain your figure?

I of course pay attention to my diet. I am not a vegetarian. I eat anything. I don’t use sugar with my tea. I eat a lot of fruits and yeah….I love chocolates.
